Green Hill Recovery, a Raleigh, North Carolina sober living and intensive outpatient (IOP) provider, is excited to announce that Rob Garland has joined its team as a primary therapist. Rob holds a Master of Social Work degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker Associate. Prior to joining Green Hill Recovery, Rob provided psychotherapy at a community mental health clinic in Chapel Hill, NC. In his work as a clinician, Rob draws from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and Existential therapies. Having been touched by addiction in a number of ways in life, Rob views recovery from addiction and substance use disorders as a recovery of the whole self and of character (to borrow from the scholar Bill White) rather than just remission from symptoms. Consequently, Rob focuses on the power of the relationship in therapy and aims to be collaborative and affirming throughout his work and life.
Rob was previously a wilderness guide, where he first learned just how life-changing experiential learning in nature can be. Rob also worked extensively as a case manager at a homeless shelter, helping adults to transition out of chronic homelessness, and as a case worker in a youth homeless and runaway shelter. As a case manager at Duke University and, years prior, as a part of a college access program at Elon University, Rob has had success supporting students in academia and those hoping to access higher education with their own behavioral, emotional, and resource challenges. Experiences such as these have helped him develop a sharp focus on the environment in which a person lives and the challenges they face.
Rob’s two favorite things are spending time with loved ones and cooking- often done in tandem. Rob also enjoys rock climbing, learning useless facts, and convincing himself that he likes running.
