Luis J. Marcano, LCMHC, LCAS-A, NCC/CCMHC is a Primary Therapist at Green Hill. He is a bilingual therapist (English and Spanish) who provides individual, family, and group therapy. Additionally, Luis takes an active role in developing new curriculum and providing administrative and clinical support to the non-clinical staff.
Luis earned his undergraduate bachelor of arts degree in Social Work in 2008 from the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras campus and his master of science degree in Mental Health Counseling in 2016, graduating with distinctions. Luis is dually licensed as a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor (LCMHC) and as a Licensed Clinical Addictions Specialist Associate (LCAS-A). He is a member of the National Board of Certified Counselors (NBCC) and is recognized as a National Certified Counselor (NCC) and a Certified Clinical Mental Health Counselor (CCMHC). Luis has nine years of clinical experience and has worked in a variety of settings including in-home services with adolescents and families, outpatient mental health programs, a substance use and dual diagnosis non-profit, and private practice. Luis is an eclectic clinician and leans heavily on evidenced-based practices such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), motivational interviewing (MI), solution-focused brief therapy (SFBT), and person-centered therapy (PCT). He draws on various therapeutic approaches and always adjusts his practice based on the individual’s needs and goals.
For Luis, being a therapist is more than a job; it’s his passion. Luis’ goal in working with young adults is to provide them with a comfortable, safe, and supportive environment that is conducive to growth. He helps clients learn coping strategies and confront barriers to emotional growth. Luis believes strongly in a collaborative approach to treatment and works with the individual, family system, and treatment team to set realistic goals and develop a plan for achieving them. Luis walks next to clients in the therapeutic process in a non-judgmental way and ensures all interventions are aligned with the individual’s personality and needs.

Luis is originally from El Salvador, grew up in Venezuela, and lived in Puerto Rico for many years before moving to North Carolina in 2009. Outside Green Hill, Luis likes to spend time with his family and friends. He enjoys an active lifestyle: working out, martial arts, and water sports are his main passions. Luis travels whenever possible and relishes opportunities to learn more about various cultures and foods. Luis believes that if you haven’t tried something new, your day isn’t complete.
