Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) for Substance Abuse

A Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) group discussing their recovery.

What is a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)?

If you’re unsure what PHP means, you’re not alone. PHP stands for Partial Hospitalization Program, which is one of the levels of treatment for substance use.

Like other health conditions, substance use can range in severity, and there are different “levels of care” that match that severity.

For some, they may need to be in an in-patient program and monitored by medical professionals as they withdraw from substances.

A PHP is the level of care that comes before or after in-patient care.

This is by design. A PHP is there to give the most professional support to someone when they are struggling the most. Which is typically in the beginning of their substance use recovery. This is the time when a person needs the most help and support.

Most PHP’s-Green Hill’s included- are structured five-day-a-week programs that include 4-5 hours of care a day. This care is made up of individual and group therapy, medication management, family therapy, and more. Unlike in-patient care, PHP is designed so that you return home every day and practice what you are learning while getting plenty of professional support.

What is PHP at a Glance:

  • Designed for people early in recovery who need extra support
  • Comes before or after inpatient care, depending on need
  • Helps stabilize people when recovery feels the hardest
  • Structured 5 days a week, 4–5 hours per day.
  • Includes group therapy, individual therapy, medication support, and family therapy
  • You go home each day—no overnight stay
  • Gives you a chance to practice what you’re learning in real life
  • Prepares you for the next step like IOP or individual therapy
  • Provides a strong foundation for long-term recovery

Early recovery can feel shaky. Habits are still forming, emotions can be intense, and stability might seem distant. PHP offers a steady foundation of care, helping you find stability and confidence before transitioning to lighter services like Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP), individual therapy, or personalized recovery management. It’s your starting point to a steadier, healthier, and more fulfilling foundation.

What Makes Green Hill’s PHP Unique?

In substance use treatment, many programs only focus on the substance use itself. At Green Hill Recovery, we take a different approach. We don’t think it’s enough to just stop using substances. Instead, we help you build a life that feels meaningful and exciting.

Good treatment should teach skills that help you handle life’s challenges. Recovery can be complicated, so we bring together a team of professionals, including psychiatrists, therapists, coaches, family therapists, and others, who all work closely with you.

Unlike many programs, our psychiatrists and medical providers are part of our team and not brought in from outside. This means they take the time to get to know you and understand your needs. They carefully talk through medication options with you and even look at how your physical health might affect your mental health. Our psychiatrists regularly meet with your therapists and also lead group sessions. This gives you more chances to learn from them and ask questions.

We also include family therapy because recovery doesn’t happen alone. Your family and friends play an important role in your healing. Family therapy helps them better understand what you’re going through, teaches them how to support you effectively, and shows them how to take care of themselves, too.

This team approach means you get more meaningful support, stronger relationships with your providers, and ultimately, a better chance at meaningful recovery.
